National Workshop on Geochronology
October, 11-12, 2022
  • About the Workshop

National Geochronology facility (NGF) at Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), supported by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Govt of India, aims to bring to Earth Science researchers a facility that is at par with international standards and offers equal opportunity to all Earth scientists with scientific merit & innovative ideas being the only criterion. A large geometry High Resolution Secondary Ion Mass spectrometer (HR-SIMS) and Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) with ancillary instruments will be capable of performing isotope research and dating an entire geological age spectrum from the youngest (kilo years) to the oldest (Hadean and Archean rocks and Meteorites), thus covering the geological history of the Earth. IUAC is organizing a workshop to make the Geoscience researchers aware about the research infrastructure available at IUAC and for the capacity building to generate trained human resource in the country. In this workshop, PhD students and Early Career Researchers (limited to 40nos.) will be trained on various aspects of chronological systematics such as how and where to use chronological systematics with research examples, Sample collection tips, tricks and tactics, Importance of various chronological instruments, analysis and interpretation of geochronological data, analytical model/software for age calculation and their usage, etc. Hands-on-training will also be imparted on the Size reduction processes, mineral separation, use of microscopic, crystallographic and elemental investigations (XRD, SEM & Q-ICPMS) in sample preparation for various chronological investigations, physical and chemical routes of sample cleaning, graphitization processes, etc. The workshop will provide a platform to the researchers working in diverse fields to discuss, identify and address various scientific curiosities related to the use of isotopes in Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences. Lectures by eminent speakers, tutorials and the hands-on-training are planned in the workshop. Applications are invited from PhD students and ECRs latest by 20th September, 2022. Limited travel support is available for a few participants from universities.
